Lasers have long fascinated us humans and have been
extensively used in Sci-Fi movies and books as powerful weapons that can
destroy pretty much anything. On the other extreme, laser light shows are one
of the most impressive displays of visual grandeur that you can witness.
In between these two common applications of lasers, the medical community worked
with this amazing technology and created a host of treatments that utilise the
many properties of lasers to treat everything from skin malformations to ocular
corrective surgeries.
One such usage of lasers emerged yesterday when the
Cincinnati Enquirer reported about the market that currently exists for the
treatment of vaginal dryness through the use of lasers. One such laser
treatments facility has already been approved by the FDA at the Christ
Hospital, Cincinnati.
At the same time, there is at least one medical
condition where laser
treatments have failed to be effective; curing toenail fungus.
The Journal
of American Academy of Dermatology undertook a study and concluded that while
fungus treatment for toenails using lasers was approved almost four years ago,
there have been several incidents where patients were unable to get any relief
despite undergoing as many as 5 laser treatments for the fungus.
